1902 American Steel & Wire Co. Field & Hog Fence Memo Advertising Booklet Used
American Steel & Wire Company wasfounded around 1899 by Elbert Henry Gary, who purchased several competing barbed wire companies in order to limit competition and drive up prices. In 1901, American Steel and Wire became a subsidiary of the U.S. Steel Company. This original memo book is used. Calendar in back. Great graphics! Hard to find bit of agricultural history! Measures approximately 5 1/4″ x 2 3/4″. White areas have tanning consistent with age. One staple binder has pulled through causing a loose and torn binding on the lower half. 2 pages toward the back have been partially torn out. Cover is worn but intact. This is an original 1901 issue of the Wool and Sheep Markets – A Journal Devoted to Sheep Culture. This is the September 15, 1901 issue which is a special issue issued in conjunction with the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. This is a magazine format of 40 pages including the covers measuring about 8.25” x 10.5” published in Chicago by the Draper Publishing and Supply Company. The masthead indicates this the “Pan-American Edition” and there is a featured article on the exhibition along with other articles and lots of advertising of interest to sheep farmers. Light soil and wear with some creasing. Rounded corners. Heavier crease at the center of the bottom edge. Please see photos for condition. Guaranteed old and original.

1901 Letter from Beldena Farms, Maquoketa, Iowa – Angora Sheep & Shetland Ponies
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Here is a hand written letter from J Murray Hoag of Beldena Farms in Maquoketa, Iowa. Beldena Farms specialized in Shetland Ponies and Angora Sheep. The letterhead has vignettes of angora sheep and ponies. This also includes the envelope with the same vignettes. John Murray Hoag (1843–1917) was a Union Army officer and Freedmen’s Bureau official in Georgia during the Reconstruction Era. After leaving the Army, he was a prolific breeder of Shetland ponies in Iowa. Later in life he returned to the Army as a recruiter in New York. While employed in the Freedmen’s bureau (c1867), he moved to Maquoketa, Iowa, where he lived for 40 years and conducted one of the largest Shetland pony farms in the country. He was elected president of the American Shetland Pony club in 1891 and vice-president in 1893. In 1895, his was the largest Shetland pony farm in the United States, and he also bred Angora sheep. In about 1907 he moved to Washington, D.C., and in 1909 he was returned to active duty and transferred to Buffalo, New York, where he took charge of the Army’s recruiting station in that city. He retired due to ill health in April 1913. The letter is folded for mailing but is otherwise good. (Signed by Hoag). The envelope has numbers on the back.
