Antique 1906 Cloth-bound Rock Island Plow Co. Pocket Notebook & Sales – Complete
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The Rock Island Plow Company dates back to 1855, and its earliest years were intertwined with the inventor of the smooth-sided steel plow, John Deere. Deere started around 1837 in Grand Detour, Illinois, but moved southwest 80 miles to Moline in 1848, which had better water and rail transportation. He formed a partnership with another man and one Robert Tate there. They built a factory and were so successful that Deere bought out his two partners in 1853. Deere had his share of bumps and bruises but ended up with the most prosperous plow company. Meanwhile, Tate took what he knew from the Deere partnership and started his own plow factory in nearby Rock Island. Buford & Tate was renamed the Rock Island Plow Co. in 1882. By then, the company had expanded beyond its original offering of steel plows to include a couple dozen horse-drawn implements. By 1900, Rock Island was manufacturing corn planters, walking cultivators, tedder rakes, plows, side delivery rakes, windrow loaders and other products like the Great Western cream separator, feed mills, Linstroth wagons, and potato machinery. It began selling gasoline engines manufactured by Alamo Gasoline Engine Co., Hillsdale, Mich., in 1914 under the Rock Island name. In 1916, Rock Island bought out the Heider Tractor Co. of Carroll, Iowa. The company continued to prospere during the 1920s, but the Depression forced it to sell out to the Case Implement Co. in 1937. This sales and farmer notebook is from 1906. It is canvas-bound with printing outside and inside, a very uncommon but rugged material for a notebook. Inside, various Rock Island implements are pictured. No prices but certain to be of interest to its owner. The canvas overlaps to form pockets in the front and back. There are writings on the first and last pages and a few inside pages but the rest of the book is clean. It measures 7 x 4 inches (18 x 10 cm) inches and maybe a quarter inch thick. The canvas is aged to a amber color and the printing is still sharp and black. A one-of-a-kind item for Rock Island, Deere, and steel plow collectors. By all rights, this should be in a glass case.
